It's really important for a pregnant woman to get tested for HIV as she can pass HIV to her baby before, during or after birth. Prevention of Mother To Child Transmission (PMTCT) services are available at clinics. This is where the woman is given medication before and during the birth, and the newborn is given medication straight after. This greatly reduces the chances of the baby getting HIV.
For feeding, discuss with your clinic whether breastfeeding or formula feeding is the safest option in your situation. If you will be breastfeeding be sure that you do not give the baby any other solids or liquids during the first 6 months while you are breastfeeding as this increases the risk of HIV virus being passed on to the baby. You should either fully breastfeed or fully bottle feed.
