Home > HIV & rights > Right to treatment

Clinics and hospitals aren't allowed to give anyone second-class service just because they've been diagnosed with HIV. Our government has issued a Patients Rights Charter that specifically says, "Everyone has the right to access to health care services that include: provision for special needs in case of persons living with HIV or AIDS patients."

But sometimes there is discrimination at clinics. Most health care workers have not been trained to treat people with HIV. So they often don't know that HIV+ people can get treatments just like people with other illnesses. Some health care workers treat hospital resources as if these were their personal property. In these cases, one has to write a letter of complaint to the hospital/ clinic authorities.
