HIV weakens the immune system, so the body can't defend itself from illnesses. These illnesses are called Opportunistic Infections (OI). The most common OI in South Africa is TB.

Most OIs can be treated and it's important for people with HIV to visit a clinic to get treatment early every time they feel sick.

ARVs (HIV medication) should decrease an HIV+ person's chance of catching OIs, as ARVs let your immune system get strong again.

It is very important to get tested for TB if you have HIV – ask for the test. You can also take medication for a year to prevent TB when you are diagnosed with HIV.

If you have TB you should be checked for HIV.
